CAST

King Florestan and his Queen have a christening ceremony for their infant child, Princess Aurora, and invite five fairies along with the entire kingdom to bestow gifts on the child. The Lilac Fairy, the most powerful of all, is just about to bestow her gift when the evil fairy Carabosse arrives, furious that she has not been invited to the christening. Catalabutte, the Master of Ceremonies is in charge of the guest list and takes the blame but Carabosse places a curse upon the baby princess as revenge: Aurora will indeed grow up to be beautiful and wise but on her sixteenth birthday she will prick her finger on a spindle and die. The Lilac Fairy cannot completely undo the curse, but she intervenes - the spindle will not cause death for the princess, but rather a peaceful 100-year sleep. Aurora will then be woken by the kiss of a handsome prince. The court is relieved.

ACT I - the Spell

It is Princess Aurora’s sixteenth birthday. After the townsfolk perform a waltz, Princess Aurora dances the Rose Adagio with her four suitors. Presently, a cloaked stranger appears and offers a gift to the princess: a spindle. As predicted, Aurora pricks her finger on the spindle, falls into a swoon and collapses. The stranger reveals herself as Carabosse who believes that her curse still stands and that the princess is dead. Once again, the Lilac Fairy reminds the King and Queen that Aurora is merely asleep. The princess is carried off to bed and the Lilac Fairy casts a spell of slumber over the entire kingdom which will only be broken when Aurora awakens.
